How to Play Guitar without Reading Music

One of the more difficult things about playing the guitar is the fact that many guitar teachers are going to have you reading music from the very start.  I found that many of my students only really want to know how to play a few songs in order to pass the time but they eventually get to the point where learning how to read music is also of interest to them.  By starting them out slowly and teaching them how to play guitar enough so that they can enjoy it, I often find that they are able to stick with it for the long term.  Don't get me wrong, I feel that it is very important to be able to read music, at least enough so that you understand what you are looking at.  I just feel that it is often a step that is better taken after the individual gets comfortable holding a guitar in their hand.

If you're trying to learn how to play guitar and would like to be able to play a few songs, the easiest way for you to be able to do this is by learning some of the chords.  Typically, there are several different chords that can be played in order for you to be able to provide background music for almost any song.  Some of the more difficult chords can be learned in order for you to mimic the exact way that the songs sound whenever they are played by the original group.  For this, you're going to need to learn finger placement, strumming techniques and a little bit about guitar tabs.  These will help to guide you so that you know where to place your fingers and which strings need to be played.

It is better if you have an instructor from the very beginning, even if you're only learning how to play the basic chords.  The reason why this is the case is because they are going to be able to help you with technique and hand placement, a habit that is difficult to break if you happen to do it wrong from the start.  Before you know it, you will be playing songs and will become comfortable enough with the guitar that you will be able to play for others.  That's an excellent place for you to start and can really build on the long musical journey that you will enjoy for the rest of your life.

Another option is to look to one of the many learn to play guitar guides which you will find online.  If you choose to go down this route, make sure that the guide you opt for includes video.
